Conclusion of President Widmer-Schlumpf's state visit to the Czech Republic

Bern, Comunicato stampa, 05.06.2012

Today, President Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf concluded her two-day state visit to the Czech Republic. The traditionally good relations between the two countries were confirmed during the various meetings.

The highlight of the state visit was a reception hosted by President Václav Klaus. The close bilateral relations and issues to do with European cooperation and international financial structures were discussed in the talks. President Widmer-Schlumpf explained to her dialogue partners the reasons which caused Switzerland to have recourse to the safeguard clause within the scope of the free movement of persons in relation to Eastern European countries (so-called EU-8 member states).

During the visit, President Widmer-Schlumpf also met the Prime Minister Petr Nečas, the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies Miroslava Němcová and the President of the Senate Milan Štĕch. In addition, talks took place with Swiss representatives of the private sector in the Czech Republic. A round of discussions with representatives from Czech civil society on the road taken by the Czech Republic from the Velvet Revolution to EU accession and a ceremony at the Vitkov national monument rounded off President Widmer-Schlumpf's programme.
