All SDC local staff and their families evacuated from Kabul

The FDFA-chartered plane from Tashkent landed at Zurich Airport on the night of 24 August 2021. On board were 219 people evacuated from Kabul, including 141 members of the SDC's local staff and their families. The remaining local SDC employees and their families have already been able to leave Kabul and are awaiting repatriation to Switzerland. All local staff wishing to leave Afghanistan have now been evacuated from the Afghan capital. At present, 15 Swiss nationals are still in Afghanistan. Switzerland is continuing its efforts to ensure that they can also be evacuated.


Message in a bottle for a sustainable future

Building a sustainable future with one million actions: this is the aim of the '1 Million Youth Actions Challenge' (1MYAC) initiative launched by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) in Gletsch (VS) on 24 August 2021. Pupils from Kollegium Spiritus Sanctus and César Ritz College in Brig sent a message in a bottle on a journey freighted with symbolism from the source of the Rhône, and called on other young people aged 10 to 30 to do likewise.


Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis guest speaker at Hungarian Ambassadors' Conference

Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), will be a guest speaker at the Hungarian Ambassadors' Conference in Budapest on 27 August. In his address, he will outline the guidelines and thematic focus areas of Switzerland's foreign policy strategy. Mr Cassis will also meet in Budapest with Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó and Minister of Justice Judit Varga, whose portfolio includes EU affairs.


Ambassadors and International Network Conference 2021 under the banner of digitalisation

The Ambassadors and International Network Conference will be held in Bern from 23 to 26 August. Besides current foreign policy issues, this year's conference will focus on the use of digital technologies and their potential. The other members of the Federal Council as well as the state secretariats will also take part in various workshops, the aim of which being to strengthen coherence in the implementation of Swiss foreign policy.


Evacuation from Kabul: Swiss charter flight departs for Tashkent

On 23 August 2021 at 10.30am, a SWISS aircraft chartered by the FDFA took off from Zurich for the Uzbek capital Tashkent. The plane will bring people who were recently evacuated from Kabul back to Europe. With this flight, Switzerland is supporting the airlift to bring people out of Afghanistan. So far, around 100 people with a Swiss connection have been flown out of Kabul. The first local SDC staff and their families were also able to leave Kabul yesterday.


Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis meets Foreign Minister of Oman in Ticino

Cooperation for peace and stability and recent developments in the Middle East were the focus of the talks between Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis and Oman's Foreign Minister, Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Al Busaidi, who was visiting Ticino. Tomorrow, the two foreign ministers will take part in the fourth Middle East Mediterranean Summer Summit, organised by the Università della Svizzera italiana (USI).


Evacuation from Kabul: FDFA organises charter flight to Uzbekistan and supports air bridge for people leaving Afghanistan

On 21 August 2021, a SWISS plane will fly to Tashkent to pick up people previously evacuated from Kabul. The plane will bring Swiss citizens and people from different countries to Europe. With this flight, the FDFA is supporting the air bridge of international partner states that is allowing people to leave Afghanistan. In a telephone conversation with his Uzbek counterpart Abdulaziz Kamilov on 19 August 2021, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, head of the FDFA, was able to ensure that various logistical problems for the charter flight are being resolved and thanked him for Uzbekistan's support for the evacuation efforts. On Saturday, about 1.3 million masks for Uzbekistan will be brought to Tashkent on this charter flight to protect against COVID-19.


Haiti earthquake: Switzerland sends specialists and allocates CHF 1 million in relief support

The toll of deaths and casualties from Saturday's earthquake in Haiti continues to rise. After the quake, Switzerland immediately mobilised specialised personnel and material to support the Haitian civil protection services. Switzerland is running its humanitarian aid operations from its embassy in Port-au-Prince, while a team from the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit has been dispatched from Bern to assist. Switzerland is providing CHF 1 million to support emergency operations.

SDC and SECO promote projects by committed young people

18.08.2021 — Press release EDA
The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs are launching the second Swiss Youth and Future prize 'Together we're better'. The goal: recognising and promoting young people's projects. The projects aim to improve the living conditions of disadvantaged people in the Global South and contribute to achieving the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). All teams with eligible entries can present their project at the International Cooperation Forum Switzerland.
