Strengthening Geneva as a Hub for Environmental Concerns

Switzerland has announced its candidacy as host State for the permanent Secretariat of the Green Climate Fund (GCF). On April 12th it submitted its offer to domicile the Fund in Geneva. At the same time, Switzerland is running for a seat on the GCF’s Executive Board. This would make it possible to create synergies as various organizations active in the domain of the environment are already represented in Geneva.

Switzerland sends search and rescue specialists to Pakistan

Last Saturday, an avalanche buried a Pakistani military camp situated at an altitude of above 4570 metres near the Siachen glacier in the north of the country. According to Pakistani army sources, 124 soldiers and 11 civilians have been trapped under the avalanche. At the request of the Government of Pakistan, Switzerland sent three rescue experts to the scene of the accident on Monday. Switzerland has an international reputation for its search and rescue expertise in high mountains. The Humanitarian Aid of the Swiss Confederation is co-ordinating the mission.

Federal government demining strategy, 2012 to 2015

The federal government has defined the strategy for its commitment to humanitarian demining for the period from 2012 to 2015. An annual amount of around 16 million Swiss francs is to be spent for projects and the secondment of experts in the fight against landmines, cluster bombs and other explosive remnants of war.

Food crisis in West Africa

In the Sahel region of West Africa more than 10 million people are facing serious food shortages due to the 2011 drought and the after-effects of the 2010 food crisis. Drawing from the experiences made in the Horn of Africa, Switzerland and other donors have reacted quickly in order to avert famine.

On 3 April 2012, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, the new Director-General of the United Nations office in Geneva, met Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, for official talks in Bern. They signed an agreement on Switzerland's financial contribution to the renovation of the Palais des Nations in Geneva. Following the meeting, Director-General Tokayev will pay a courtesy visit to the President of the Swiss Confederation Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf.

The challenge of chronic diseases

Chronic diseases are a major challenge for our health systems: they are the principal cause of death in the world and account for 75% of health-care costs in the world. The Geneva Health Forum examines innovative solutions to confront this problem. This international conference has been organised by the University Hospitals of Geneva and the Medical Faculty of the University of Geneva with the support of the SDC.

Switzerland wants to “democratise” the UN Security Council

On Wednesday in New York, the five members of the “Small 5” (S-5) group at the United Nations submitted proposals for improving the working methods of the Security Council. Switzerland is a member of this group. The aim is to make the UN’s most powerful organ more open, transparent and efficient, and to include the other UN member states more closely in its deliberations. The reform of the Security Council in the direction of the “democratisation” of its working methods is one of the focal points of Switzerland’s UN policy.

Sustainability and green economy: progress at the Rio+20 negotiations halting

From the perspective of Switzerland a satisfactory outcome of the United Nations Rio+20 Conference on Sustainability remains out of reach. The countries participating in the first round of negotiations, held between 19 and 27 March 2012 in New York, were very far apart in their positions. The actual conference will take place from 13 to 22 June 2012 in Rio de Janeiro.
