The International Commission against the Death Penalty moves its headquarters to Geneva

President of the Swiss Confederation Micheline Calmy-Rey today took part in the opening of the fourth meeting of the International Commission against the Death Penalty in Geneva. She welcomed the decision by the Commission to move its headquarters from Madrid to Geneva, where it will be integrated into the Academy of International Humanitarian Law and of Human Rights


OSCE Election Experts in Switzerland

The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) will be present in Switzerland to observe the preparation and conduct of the Federal elections slated for 23 October 2011. The OSCE experts intend to direct their attention particularly at the electronic voting option and at the financing of the election campaigns.


SDC set to bring its final jubilee street action to Basel

Following on from appearances in Geneva, Bern and Bellinzona, the Swiss Agency for Cooperation and Development (SDC) is set to bring its jubilee street action to the Barfüsserplatz in the city of Basel on 14 and 15 October 2011. These open-air events are an opportunity for the public to find out more about the wide-ranging activities of the SDC over its 50-year history (1961-2011). Manuel Bessler, the humanitarian aid delegate of the Swiss Confederation and head of the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit (SHA) will attend the opening ceremony.


The President of the Swiss Confederation to travel to Brussels

On Tuesday, 11 October 2011, the President of the Swiss Confederation, Micheline Calmy-Rey, will meet representatives of the European Parliament for talks in Brussels. In the evening, she will open the first “Soirée suisse” at the Swiss Mission to the European Union in Brussels.


World Mountain Conference in Lucerne

Around 150 international experts will attend the Lucerne World Mountain Conference on 11 and 12 October 2011. They will discuss the results achieved so far and the opportunities and challenges in the global development of mountain areas. The results of the conference will contribute to international initiatives.


State Visit by the President of the Republic of India

On 3 October 2011, the Federal Council received Her Excellency Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil, President of the Republic of India, and her husband, on the occasion of a State Visit to Switzerland. Following the ceremonial welcome by a guard of honour on the Federal Square and official speeches in Parliament, the Swiss delegation, led by Federal President Micheline Calmy-Rey, and the Indian delegation held bilateral talks. The second day of this State Visit will feature a visit to the canton of Vaud.


Principles against Impunity: the Human Rights Council adopts a Resolution presented by Switzerland instituting a Special Rapporteur (last modification, the 19.09.2012)

The UN Human Rights Council has adopted by consensus a resolution presented by Switzerland, Argentina, and Morocco instituting a Special Rapporteur for the promotion of truth, justice, reparation and guarantees of non-reccurence. The resolution, presented on 29 September 2011, was sponsored by nearly 80 States representing all regional groups.


New Swiss Ambassador to Libya

The Federal Council has appointed Michel Gottret, currently Ambassador to Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain, as ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of Switzerland to Libya. Ambassador Gottret will take up his new post in Tripoli as soon as possible.


SimEX 2011: Deployment of international Search and Rescue teams in response to a simulated disaster

From 3 - 10 October 2011, Switzerland will be conducting a simulated search and rescue exercise (SimEX) in Kriens, canton Lucerne. This is in conformity with the guidelines of the UN INSARAG (United Nations International Search and Rescue Advisory Group), which require that international rescue teams receive regular training to ensure they are equipped and trained to meet the exceptional demands that arise during deployment to deal with earthquakes and other major disasters.


Federal President Calmy-Rey at EU-Tunisia Task Force meeting in Tunis

To reinforce and better coordinate international support for the political and economic transformation of Tunisia following the fall of the Ben Ali regime, an EU-Tunisia Task Force was set up. On Wednesday, 28 September 2011, Federal President Micheline Calmy-Rey will represent Switzerland at the first meeting of this Task Force. At this meeting, she will underscore Switzerland's willingness to ensure that frozen illicit funds of persons associated with the Ben Ali-Regime are swiftly returned to the Tunisian people.


Federal President Calmy-Rey meets the heads of state from Germany, Austria and Liechtenstein in Vaduz

On 26 September 2011, the heads of state of the four German-speaking countries met in Vaduz for their annual exchange of views and opinions. Federal President Micheline Calmy-Rey represented Switzerland at the meeting. The focus of the discussion was on the political and economic situation in Europe, the upheaval in the Arab world and the fundamental theme of education in each of the German-speaking countries.


State visit of the President of the Republic of India

At the invitation of the Federal Council, Her Excellency Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil, President of the Republic of India, will carry out a state visit to Switzerland on 3 and 4 October 2011. Today India is one of Switzerland’s most important partners in Asia. Bilateral and political contacts are constantly developing, and trade and scientific cooperation between the two countries are flourishing.
