Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter to represent Switzerland at the 2nd Nuclear Security Summit, in South Korea

Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter will represent Switzerland at the 2nd Nuclear Security Summit this coming Monday and Tuesday in Seoul at the invitation of the South Korean President, Lee Myung-bak. More than 50 heads of state and of government and ministers will attend the Summit in the Korean capital, as well as the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, and the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Yukiya Amano. The Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) will take the opportunity presented by the Summit to meet government representatives of other countries, and on Sunday he will have an official meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of South Korea, Kim Sung-Hwan.


Sharing responsibility: Humanitarian Aid annual conference in Basel

With the motto "Sharing responsibility" and in the presence of Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, Humanitarian Aid and the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit have held their annual conference in Basel. Manuel Bessler, the Federal Council's new Delegate for Humanitarian Aid, chaired the conference for the first time. He and Federal Councillor Burkhalter explained plans to further develop Switzerland's humanitarian aid work. Other speakers included the UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres and Guy Morin, President of the Executive Council of Basel-Stadt.



Switzerland exports a piece of glacier to South Korea

Expo 2012, which will be held from 12 May until 12 August in the South Korean coastal city of Yeosu, will focus on water, with the slogan “The Living Ocean and Coast“. Over 100 countries will take part. The Swiss Pavilion will present an up-close look at the mountain scenery that is so popular in Asia and will feature Switzerland as Europe's water tower.



Renewal of the bilateral approach

President Widmer-Schlumpf and Federal Councillor Burkhalter have met the President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, and the President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, within the scope of a working visit in Brussels. The discussions focused on current developments in bilateral relations, which both sides described as close and intensive.


Switzerland and the UK supplement withholding tax agreement

Today in Brussels, Switzerland and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland signed a Protocol of Amendment that supplements the withholding tax agreement of 6 October 2011. The agreement is thus ready for parliamentary deliberation. It should enter into force at the start of 2013.


Declaration for Rio+20: A change of course is needed in the agricultural sector

To successfully feed the growing world population, agriculture must be more sparing in its use of natural resources. The UN Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development to be held in June 2012 should point the way towards a radical change of course in global agriculture and food policy. This is the key demand posed in the Declaration “Nourishing our people - nurturing our planet” by high-ranking representatives of government, international organizations, and the scientific community at a roundtable organized on 15 and 16 March 2012 in New York. One of the inspirational forces behind this event was an initiative launched by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).


The two Swiss hostages have returned safe and sound from Pakistan

The Swiss woman and the Swiss man who were kidnapped in the province of Baluchistan in Pakistan at the beginning of July 2011 have now returned safely to Switzerland. They were welcomed back at Zürich airport by relatives and friends. They thanked the members of the inter-departmental task force for their efforts and support over the past months.


Signature of cooperation framework between the European Defence Agency (EDA) and Switzerland

Switzerland and the European Defence Agency (EDA) want to cooperate in the armaments sector. A corresponding cooperation framework was signed in Brussels today. The framework without legal commitment enables Switzerland to recognise armaments policy developments at an early stage, and to access multilateral armaments cooperation in Europe. Switzerland is free to decide what information it wants to exchange with the EDA and in what projects and programs it wishes to participate.



International Geneva: the Confederation and the Canton Geneva sign a memorandum of understanding

The Confederation, represented by the Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) Didier Burkhalter, and the Canton Geneva signed a memorandum of understanding on the working of the Confederation-Canton Permanent Joint Group (GPC) on the priorities for International Geneva. This document provides an institutional framework whose purpose is to improve the preparation, the implementation and the follow-up of work between the Confederation, the Canton Geneva and the City of Geneva.
