Switzerland to attend IMF and World Bank 2019 Spring Meetings in Washington

President Ueli Maurer, Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin and Thomas Jordan, Chairman of the Governing Board of the Swiss National Bank, will be in Washington from 12 to 13 April 2019. They will attend the joint Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group (WBG).



African Union and consultations: State Secretary Pascale Baeriswyl in political talks in Ethiopia

FDFA State Secretary Pascale Baeriswyl met members of the African Union on Monday in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa at the organisation's headquarters. At the heart of discussions were peace and security policy and the issue of migration. On Tuesday she held bilateral consultations with her Ethiopian counterpart, State Minister of Foreign Affairs Markos Tekle. Ms Baeriswyl had come from Rwanda, where she took part in the remembrance ceremony marking the 25th anniversary of the genocide, with a delegation led by Marina Carobbio Guscetti, President of the National Council.


Positive review of Switzerland's international cooperation by the OECD

The Development Assistance Committee presented the results of its review of Switzerland's international cooperation in Bern on 5 April 2019. Its findings are for the most part positive: Switzerland is a strong and reliable development partner. The Committee has made new recommendations to Switzerland to enable it to meet the challenges ahead. Among other measures, it calls on Switzerland to focus on its commitments and to work towards spending 0.5% of its gross national income (GNI) on official development assistance (ODA).



Federal Council decides on next steps for the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons

The Federal Council supports disarmament and, in particular, nuclear disarmament. It has decided to pursue, by resorting to external expertise, its analysis on whether Switzerland should join the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and will review the situation before the end of 2020. It will use this reflection period to assess recent international and security developments.


Federal Council receives Hereditary Prince Alois of Liechtenstein for state visit

On Wednesday, 3 April, His Serene Highness Hereditary Prince Alois of Liechtenstein was welcomed to Switzerland by the full Federal Council led by President Ueli Maurer. The Hereditary Prince, who performs the duties of head of state, is being accompanied on the visit by his spouse, Her Royal Highness Hereditary Princess Sophie of Liechtenstein, and a high-ranking delegation from the Principality. During official talks at the Bernerhof the delegations acknowledged the 100th anniversary of bilateral relations and discussed European affairs and cooperation between the two countries in an international context.


A Switzerland that is not content to stand by

This past year has been marked by droughts and flooding. The devastation wrought by Cyclone Idai in south-east Africa points to a future where such events will no longer be an exception. In view of the urgency of this global issue, the focus of this year's Annual Conference of Swiss Humanitarian Aid was 'Water in Crisis'. The conference brought together representatives of the international community, water experts and those affected to discuss the challenges ahead and new approaches and solutions.


In 2018 more than one in ten Swiss nationals lived abroad

At the end of 2018, 760 200 Swiss nationals lived abroad representing a 1.1% increase compared with the previous year. The majority were based in Europe, particularly in France. One fifth of Swiss nationals abroad were aged 65 or more and 6% were aged over 79. These are the results of the statistics on the Swiss abroad from the Federal Statistical Office (FSO).


Ignazio Cassis holds political talks in Egypt on bilateral cooperation, regional issues and migration

On a working visit to Cairo, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry. The talks focused on Switzerland's relations with Egypt, an important partner country in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Mr Cassis, head of the FDFA, had started his working visit on Sunday with an event marking 110 years of bilateral trade relations, where he met with Egypt's Minister of Investment and International Cooperation Sahar Nasr and toured a Swiss-supported project in migration.


2019 Joint Statement by Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission Member States

Representatives of Poland, Sweden and Switzerland, Member States of the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission (NNSC) in Korea, met in Panmunjom and Seoul 21 and 22 March, 2019 for their annual consultations. The discussion focused on the current situation on the Korean Peninsula and its impact on the activities of the NNSC. The representatives also evaluated the operational tasks of the NNSC including exchange of information and the co-operation with its partners. The NNSC Member States reaffirmed their long-term commitment to contribute to a permanent peace solution on the Korean Peninsula. In addition, the NNSC Member States exchanged views with several representatives from United Nations Command (UNC), United Nations Command Military Armistice Commission (UNCMAC) and the Ministry of National Defense.


Switzerland's engagement in the Human Rights Council

The UN Human Rights Council concluded its 40th session in Geneva today. During the four-week session, Switzerland took a firm stand to ensure that hu-man rights are respected, promoted and implemented.
