Meeting of the “Confederation-Canton Geneva Permanent Joint Group on the Priorities of International Geneva” on security issues

Bern, Press release, 12.09.2011

The Confederation-Canton Geneva Permanent Joint Group on the Priorities of International Geneva (GPC) met today under the aegis of President of the Confederation Micheline Calmy-Rey, head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) and of Mrs Isabel Rochat, head of the Department of Security, Police and Environment of Geneva (DSPE), who was accompanied by Mark Muller, President of the Council of the State of Geneva and David Hiler, head of the Finance Department.

During this extraordinary meeting on security issues, the federal authorities and the Genevan cantonal authorities analysed the overall security situation in Geneva. It was pointed out that diplomats are inhabitants of the canton just like other citizens of the Canton Geneva.

The group met at the joint request of the Confederation and of the Canton Geneva. The group stressed the importance that the Confederation and the Canton attached to the security situation in Geneva and the need to pay particular attention to this issue.

The Confederation-Canton Geneva Permanent Joint Group on the Priorities of International Geneva (GPC) is a joint decision-making body of the Federal and cantonal host state authorities in which initiatives regarding International Geneva are discussed and implemented. Its meetings aim in particular to examine and to decide on strategies for the coming years and to analyse the best ways of consolidating the position of International Geneva in a context of increasing competition between the host states.
