Federal councillor Calmy-Rey appointed to the Global Sustainability Panel by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has established a special panel for global sustainability. Its task will be to devise new approaches for the solution of global problems in the area of environment and development. The panel will consist of over 20 high ranking personalities. At the request of the Secretary General, Federal Councillor Micheline Calmy-Rey, head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), will be a member of this panel.

The Global Sustainability Panel (GSP) established by  the UN Secretary General will analyse dominant institutional and financial paradigms in the area area of  environment and development and will develop new approaches. Its  working priorities will include climate change and the related social and economic opportunities for development of the poorest countries.

The GSP will be headed by Finland's president Tarja Kaarina Halonen and the South African president Jacob Zuma. The panel will consist of about 20 high ranking personalities from a wide variety of geographical backgrounds and from the fields of politics, development, the environment and diplomacy. 

At the request of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Federal Councillor Micheline Calmy-Rey will join this panel. This appointment pays tribute to Switzerland's activity in the UN. It also provides Switzerland with an excellent opportunity to continue working internationally for sustainable development and to be in the front line of efforts to find solutions to the most pressing global problems.
