Since the start of the crisis, the SDC has donated CHF 13.4 million to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), which is responsible for coordinating all reconstruction-related activities in that country. In addition, Swiss experts have developed technical standards for the long-term relocation of displaced people who will eventually return home.

Water management and peace promotion in the Middle East: Water as a source of peace

01.12.2013 - 30.06.2016

Since 2009, Switzerland has been involved in a new type of cooperation which combines peace promotion and the sustainable management of water resources in the Middle East. This region is experiencing a major crisis caused by the decline in quality and the progressive drying up of numerous common water resources. An independent report published in 2011 established that the sustainable management of cross-border water resources on a political level could not only avoid natural disasters and human tragedies but could even develop into a means of promoting peace.

Switzerland brings to North Africa its internationally recognised expertise in security sector reform

01.11.2011 - 31.12.2016

The uprisings in North Africa at the beginning of 2011 were directed to a considerable extent against the security forces on which the dictatorial regimes of Egypt, Libya and Tunisia have relied for decades. There is an urgent need for reorientation of the armed forces of the state – army, police and security services – to ensure a successful democratic transition. Thanks to the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of the Armed Forces (DCAF) Switzerland is able to offer internationally recognised expertise in this area. Partner countries receive on request rapid, tailor-made support in carrying out security sector reform. Despite a number of similarities the challenges in Tunisia, Morocco, Libya and Egypt are quite different.

Water Security Middle East (Blue Peace)

01.02.2019 - 31.12.2021

In the Middle East, the dire situation of water resources demands stronger regional cooperation than ever before. The Blue Peace Middle East Initiative is the only regional platform engaging six countries around water issues. Together with its partners from academia, international organisations, civil society and the private sector, Switzerland is able to promote policy and concrete solutions for serving the most vulnerable populations leading to sustainable development and peace building. Stability in the region is in the interest of Switzerland.

North Africa Cultural Programme (NACP), Phase 1

15.12.2018 - 14.03.2022

By developing a Regional Cultural Programme, Switzerland seeks to facilitate intercultural dialogue and exchange as a foundation for peace and conflict sensitive development in North Africa and to foster artistic expression as a driver of change in support to the challenges of transition. This will promote peaceful coexistence, political stability and social cohesion in North Africa, hence providing a contribution to the prevention of violent extremism and alternatives for the fulfillment of North African youth in their own societies.

Regional Development and Protection Program (RDPP)

01.12.2018 - 31.12.2021

The conflict in Syria has forced hundreds of thousands of Syrians to seek refuge in neighboring countries, confronting the concerned governments, host communities, and the refugees themselves with tremendous challenges. Switzerland, first by the Secretariat for Migration and now by SDC, supports Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq to address these challenges and mitigate the impact of forced displacement on host communities through a combination of protection with livelihood approaches. SDC is well positioned to further the labor market integration of refugees and other vulnerable migrants due to its long-standing experience on labor migration issues in the region.

Facility for Refugees, Migrants, Forced Displacement and Rural Stability (IFAD)

01.12.2017 - 31.12.2023

Switzerland is committed at the highest political level to help countries in the Near East and North Africa (NENA) region coping with the refugee crisis. By co-financing two projects funded by IFAD (the International Fund for Agricultural Development) in Jordan and Lebanon, SDC will contribute to create sustainable livelihoods for thousands of Syrian refugees, and will also support host communities to increase their income and food security by improving the quality of their small ruminants and cattle, as well as their value in the market.
