Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis meets Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio in Ticino

Following the reopening of borders within Europe, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis has met the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Luigi Di Maio in Ticino. Together with his Italian counterpart, the head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) highlighted the good cooperation between Switzerland and Italy in managing the COVID-19 pandemic, and expressed solidarity and encouragement to the people living on either side of the Italian-Swiss border.

Ignazio Cassis opens the 5th edition of the Switzerland-Italy Dialogue Forum

Today in Genoa, Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis opened the fifth edition of the Switzerland-Italy Dialogue Forum, in the presence of more than 150 Swiss and Italian personalities. On the margins of the forum, the head of the FDFA met the Italian minister for regional affairs and autonomies, Erika Stefani.

In exactly one year from today, on 10 December 2018, Switzerland together with the international community will commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which 70 years after its adoption, remains of unequivocal relevance. Human rights are a necessity for our societies, an invaluable ingredient to boost peace and stability and to foster sustainable development. Human rights are at the heart of the values represented by Switzerland and its political model, which is founded on the principles of democracy, non-discrimination, gender equality, peaceful coexistence, and mutual respect among people having different religious, linguistic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Switzerland calls upon its partners to join it in making this Human Rights Day 2017 a day of unequivocal relevance for the promotion and the protection of human rights.

Ignazio Cassis in Rome on his first foreign trip

Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis, head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, travelled to Rome on Tuesday for his first trip abroad. Mr Cassis chose Italy as his first foreign destination to underscore the importance Switzerland attaches to this neighbouring country, with which he intends to strengthen already very close ties. "With this visit, I hope to reaffirm our friendship and open new avenues for dialogue with Italy," said Mr Cassis after his meeting with Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano. The two men discussed bilateral issues, focusing on tax matters that still remain to be settled.

President Schneider-Ammann to travel to Belgium and Malta

Schneider-Ammann will attend a gathering of the heads of state of German-speaking countries in Brussels and in the German-speaking region of Belgium next week; the meeting will take place on Wednesday and Thursday (7 and 8 September). On Friday and Saturday (9 and 10 September), the president has been invited to pay a state visit to Malta.

Federal Councillor Doris Leuthard welcomes Solar Impulse in Abu Dhabi after its round-the-world flight

Bern, 26.07.2016 - On Tuesday 26 July, Federal Councillor Doris Leuthard was on site to welcome the solar-powered plane Solar Impulse as it landed at its final destination, Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), following its round-the-world flight. She also congratulated the initiators and pilots Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg in the name of the Federal Council. On the fringes of the celebrations, Ms Leuthard also met with the minister of energy of the UAE government for bilateral talks.    

Switzerland condemns the attack in Nice and mourns the death of at least two Swiss nationals

Bern, 15.07.2016 - Switzerland is shocked and appalled by the attack in Nice, which claimed the lives of over 80 people. At least two Swiss citizens were among the victims. The President of the Swiss Confederation, Johann N. Schneider-Ammann, has condemned the attack in the strongest terms and has written to the French President, François Hollande, to express his condolences in the name of the Swiss people. In letters of condolence, other members of the Federal Council also expressed their sympathy and consternation to their French counterparts. On Friday afternoon, the Confederation's Security Core Group met with representatives of the Conference of Cantonal Police Commanders of Switzerland to discuss the situation.

Federal Councillor Ueli Maurer on working visit to Italy

Today, Federal Councillor Ueli Maurer is on working visit to Italy. He will meet Minister of the Interior Angelino Alfano and Finance Minister Pier Carlo Padoan for talks in Rome in the afternoon. They will discuss bilateral cooperation in the area of migration and the status of the tax and financial dialogue, among other things.

Alain Berset to open Swiss Pavilion in Venice tomorrow

Federal Councillor Alain Berset is due to open the Swiss Pavilion at the 15th Architecture Biennale of Venice tomorrow. On display is the «Incidental Space» project by Christian Kerez, architect and professor at ETH Zurich. Together with specialists from research and manufacturing, he explores the limits of what is architecturally feasible today thanks to modern technology. Mr Kerez and his team have created a walkable spatial structure achievable only with the latest in production technology. It offers visitors an extraordinary spatial experience.
