Seventieth anniversary of Sino-Swiss diplomatic relations: Profiles series- Max Petitpierre

This year marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Switzerland, one of the first Western countries to recognise the People’s Republic of China. In the seven decades of diplomatic ties, bilateral relations have reached many milestones marked by, for instance, the Free Trade Agreement in 2013, the first FTA China signed with a continental European country. The two countries’ relations have been flourishing in recent years, with frequent reciprocal visits of top officials and close exchanges on all levels. To commemorate the 70 years of diplomatic ties, the Embassy of Switzerland is running a series of profiles of people who have contributed greatly to our two nations’ relations. These people can be a politician, a scientist, a scholar, an artist or even a watchmaker who introduced Swiss watch making to the Middle Kingdom.

The Embassy of Switzerland in China hosted a concert and a grand reception on Friday January 17 in the presence of Isabelle Moret, President of Swiss Parliament, Chen Zhu,  Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China, Swiss Ambassador to China Bernardino Regazzoni and more than 200 distinguished guests at the Ambassador’s residence, ushering in a year-long celebration of the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Switzerland and the People’s Republic of China.


President of the National Council, Isabelle Moret, pays official visit to China

The president of the National Council, Isabelle Moret (FDP, VD) will pay an official visit to China from 13 to 17 January. The programme includes a meeting with her counterpart and working discussions with other government representatives. Ms Moret will also take part in the opening event of a year of celebrations to mark the seventieth anniversary of diplomatic relations between Switzerland and China.



On Autumnal Equinox - Raise your glass to wine of the future

What a better way to officially welcome autumn than having a glass of Swiss wine? The Ambassador of Switzerland to China, Bernardino Regazzoni and his wife Maria Cristina Regazzoni, invited guests to enjoy Swiss wine on the night of Autumnal Equinox to celebrate the season of harvest. The wines tasted are made from grape varieties developed by a renowned Swiss research institute. The grapes, which are immune to diseases, made world headlines and represented a breakthrough in viticulture.

With Swiss drones as the brand-new theme, we will present Switzerland’s drone ecosystem and innovation in the field of flying robots. According to various rankings, Switzerland is the most innovative country in the world and also one of the most competitive. Under this framework, an important potential of bilateral collaborations exists between our two countries.


House of Switzerland touring China from 2021

The Swiss Federal Council has decided in a recent meeting to capitalise on the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Beijing as a platform to promote Switzerland in China. As part of a one-year campaign beginning in 2021, the House of Switzerland will travel to various cities across China, showcasing the diversity of Switzerland with partners from business, tourism, science and culture.


Swiss President Ueli Maurer meets Chinese President Xi Jinping

On Monday, 29 April, Swiss President Ueli Maurer was received by Chinese President Xi Jinping for a state visit. The official talks focused on ways of further developing the very good relations between Switzerland and China, economic and financial policy matters, and the Belt and Road Initiative.


Swiss President Ueli Maurer to visit China with finance and business delegation; invited for state visit

Swiss President Ueli Maurer will pay a visit to China from 22 to 30 April accompanied by a finance and business delegation. Chinese President Xi Jinping has invited Mr Maurer for a state visit on 28 and 29 April. Following a Federal Council decision taken on 10 April, Switzerland and China will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation with third markets under the Belt and Road Initiative during the visit. In the days prior to that, Mr Maurer will hold meetings with the Chinese authorities and representatives from the financial and business sectors and attend the second Belt and Road Forum.


2nd edition of Sino-Swiss Architecture Dialogue kicks off; China premiere of Mario Botta documentary to further exchanges

Building on the success of the inaugural Sino-Swiss Architecture Dialogue (SSAD) in 2018, the second edition returns to Beijing and Shanghai, with an additional stop in Chengdu. The three-city dialogue, held from 10 to 14 April with the participation of the world’s renowned Swiss architect Mario Botta and film director Loretta Dalpozzo, consists of a rich program of documentary screening, lecture, master class, and panel discussion.
