The UNDP works in around 170 countries and territories, helping to eradicate poverty and reduce inequality and exclusion. It supports states in developing guidelines and institutional capabilities and in building resilience in order to sustain development results.
This appointment strengthens Switzerland's presence at the highest UN level with a politically and strategically important position. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by the heads of state and government in September 2015, created a new global framework to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. The UNDP supports the states in their efforts to attain those goals. Switzerland sees this appointment as a recognition of its commitment as a member of the UN and as a long-standing supporter of the UNDP's work: since its accession, Switzerland has consistently played an active role in international cooperation, sustainable development, human security and human rights, as well as in reforms to increase the efficiency of the UN system.
Ambassador Spoljaric Egger, currently head of the United Nations and International Organisations Division at the FDFA in Bern, has many years of experience in multilateral diplomacy and the UN system.
