Africa Transport Policy Programme (SSATP)

This project aims at supporting the Urban Mobility and Accessibility Thematic Cluster of the Africa Transport Policy Program (SSATP) hosted within the World Bank, a program with a strong African ownership facilitating policy development and related capacity-building in the transport sector of Africa.

Contesto Transport is essential for economic growth, poverty alleviation and inclusiveness, as it enables access to goods, services and jobs. Furthermore, transport is a key sector in the global climate change mitigation agenda, as it presently contributes to some 23% of total CO2 emissions. With soon more than half of Africa’s population living in cities, providing a sustainable response to the demand for mobility and accessibility of urban dwellers is an urgent growing concern.
Obiettivi The project expected impact is universal access by sustainable transport for Africa urban populations by 2030.
Effetti a medio termine Reinforced capacities of national decision makers, which aim at adopting sustainable urban mobility and accessibility policies.Reinforced capacities of urban decisions makers, which start to apply sustainable urban mobility and accessibility practices.Reinforced capacities of urban technical staff, that complete preliminary steps towards adopting and implementing key measures in relation to urban mobility and accessibility.

Risultati principali attesi:   Working Groups Meetings (part of SSATP governance structure).Policy notes and best practice standards (including in relation to reduction of CO2 emissions).Research papers and strategy notes on urban form and land use.Observatories on urban mobility and accessibility in African cities.Advocacy and dissemination workshops.Community of Practices.SSATP Annual Meeting.Implementation documents which are adapted to the specific context, for the establishment of urban transport agencies, the setting up of financial systems, and the restructuring of informal public transport services in each of the selected countries or urban areas.Strategy notes presenting issues related to, and key features of, sound integrated multimodal urban mobility plans and traffic management plans, as well as the terms of reference for consultants services to prepare these plans, in each of the selected urban areas Training events.
