Improving Warsaw Commuter Rail Services

The city of Warsaw is growing at a rapid pace. The need for maintenance, improvement and development of the public transport system in the city and the wider metropolitan area is apparent. This project aims at improving the efficiency, reliability, safety and comfort of passenger transport services on an important commuter railway line linking the city of Grodzisk Mazowiecki to the Warsaw city center.

The direct beneficiary is the Warsaw Commuter Rail Ltd. as the company receiving six new modern traction units and a state of the art Passenger Information and Monitoring System. Indirect beneficiaries are i) passengers benefitting from better connections, shorter travel times, higher comfort, better information and improved safety; ii) elderly and differently abled people benefitting from easy access to the new traction units; and iii) inhabitants of the south-western part of the Warsaw metropolitan area due to improved public transport services.

Contesto
The project's overall objective is to increase the operational efficiency, reliability, safety, environmental sustainability and comfort of public passenger railway transport along the Grodzisk - Warsaw commuter line. This will be achieved by purchasing modern rolling stock and the introduction of a passenger information and monitoring system. The project contributes to the implementation of the Polish government's public transportation policy (particularly with regard to increasing the share of public transport, connecting sub-regional centers and establishing an effective and safe public transport system).
Obiettivi
The goal of the project is to improve health and living conditions for the whole population in the covered region and to improve environmental conditions, particularly with regard to air quality, in the covered region.
Attività
  • Procurement of six modern traction units with electric engines of the latest generation, reduced noise emissions, ergonomic seats, air conditioning, a dynamic audio-visual information system and sliding doors.
  • Procurement and installation of a latest technology Passenger Information and Monitoring System.
  • Training of the Executing Agency's staff on the modern traction units and the Passenger Information and Monitoring System.
Risultati
  • Increased economic efficiency of the railway line
  • Improved service quality on the railway line, particularly with regard to the Passenger Information and Monitoring System
  • Improved accessibility of public railway transport for elderly and differently abled people
  • Increased environmental sustainability of the overall transport system (e.g. noise reduction)
  • A change in the modal split in favour of public transport in the south-western part of the Warsaw metropolitan area
