Sustainable conservation on Hungarian Natura 2000 sites

Countrywide surveys and assessments of data-deficient forest and wetland species and habitats deliver lacking data necessary to decide on corrective measures. Based on the data, management plans for Natura 2000 areas are elaborated in close cooperation with all stakeholders as farmers or the forest industry. The plans contain corrective measures and will contribute to preserve the areas combining the interests of environment and economy.

Contexte
The first country report on the implementation of Natura 2000 in Hungary and the situation of species and habitats of community interest highlight that the conservation status of certain water-related and forest habitats is unfavorable or bad in the Pannonian biogeographical region Hungary is belonging to. According to the country report, only 25 % of the species and 11 % of the habitats of community importance have a favorable conservation status in Hungary. The report further states that there is not enough information necessary for assessing the exact conservation status of all protected species and habitats.

Hungarian registration number: SH 4/8
Objectifs
The conservation status of 12 Natura 2000 areas with forests and wetlands is improved in coherence with European and Hungarian regulations. For this purpose, newly elaborated management plans lay a sound basis for an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable management of these Natura 2000 areas.
Activités
In a first step, countrywide surveys and assessments for data-deficient forest and wetland species and habitats shall be carried out. On the basis of this data, 12 management plans of Natura 2000 areas shall be elaborated with participation of stakeholders such as farmers or forestry. In the regions of Mátra and Kiskunság, the implementation of two plans will be closely monitored in practice and lessons learnt will be used to finalize all the management plans.
Résultats
The expected results are:

  • Survey results about 40 data-deficient species;
  • Countrywide assessment data of forest and wetland habitats;
  • 12 elaborated management plans for Natura 2000 areas in a participatory approach;
  • Monitoring results of the implementation of two newly developed management plans.
