Transportation of schoolchildren
Today, many children in rural and disadvantaged regions of Latvia have a long and frequently unsafe way to school – public transport is often not available. Therefore, this project finances 110 schoolbuses to be handed over to 60 local governments. In this way, 9'000 schoolchildren will have a safe means of getting to school and will benefit from better access to education. Thème / région ciblée
Sécurité, stabilité et soutien aux processus de réforme
Développement régional Groupe-cible
Families with schoolchildren living in the regions concerned. At least 60 local governments of disadvantaged regions.
Contexte
Local governments have the responsibility to ensure the transportation of school children on local routes not covered by public transport. Recently, around 300 state
public transport routes have been cancelled thus increasing the area not covered by public transport. As a result, distances to local schools are considerable and getting to school is unsafe due to
traffic accidents and an increased number of child abduction cases. The problem will be aggravated by the reform of the education system which will reduce the number of schools thus increasing the
distance to school. The buses now being used for the transportation of school children are either quite old or recently bought second-hand buses of rather insufficient quality.
Objectifs
The project shall improve the transport system of schoolchildren in rural and disadvantaged regions of Latvia. Thanks to the purchase of new school buses, at least 9'000
children shall have a safe means to get to school which will also contribute to improved access to education.
Activités
Approximately 110 schoolbuses will be bought in a public procurement process and then delivered to at least 60 local governments of disadvantaged and peripheral regions. The procurement of the buses will be done in three phases each of which will be concluded by an evaluation before proceeding with next steps. Résultats
