Security, stability, and support for reforms
The fostering of regional institutions and communal authorities is part and parcel of Switzerland's core competencies in international cooperation. In concert with the partners, the weak points will be identified and strategies will be developed to remedy them.

Environment and infrastructure
Waste, waste-water management, reduction of pollutant emissions / greenhouse gases, and the increase of energy efficiency, as well as the modernization of public transport are all urgent concerns in the partner countries. Furthermore, significant challenges also exist in the area of biodiversity and nature protection.

Promotion of the private sector
By providing support to small and medium-sized enterprises, for instance through the development of appropriate financing instruments or to support institutional and regulatory capacity building for corporate sector financial reporting and auditing at the national level.

Human and social development
As follow-up to earlier programmes conducted during the transition phase, not only the offer, but also the access to quality healthcare can be enhanced both for mothers and their young children and for the elderly. Disease prevention campaigns can also be supported. Another priority area covers scientific research, education, and training.
