Renewable Energy Systems in Healthcare Facilities in the Mazowieckie Voivodship

The project is situated in the Mazowieckie Voivodship in Central Poland, the largest and most populous Voivodship in Poland. Accordingly, the consumption of fossil fuels is very high, which results in significant emissions of greenhouse gases. Since health care facilities consume a significant amount of energy, the project aims to decrease emissions and environmental pollution by introducing renewable energy sources for hot water production in 12 healthcare facilities in the Mazowieckie region.

Theme/Focus Area
Environment and Infrastructure
Basic Infrastructure: Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy
Target Group
The direct beneficiaries are the municipalities owning the health care facilities participating in the project. They will particularly benefit from reduced energy costs as less conventional fuel needs to be purchased. Indirect beneficiaries are the users of the health care facilities, i.e. patients, visitors, people who work there and people living in the vicinity of the health care facilities.
Context
The project is situated in the Mazowieckie Voivodship in Central Poland. The Mazowieckie Voivodship is the largest and most populous Voivodship in Poland. Accordingly, the con-sumption of fossil fuels is very high, which results in significant emissions of greenhouse gases. While high emission levels and dust particle concentration partly result from industrial activity, transport and residential activities (heating), the energy consumption of public entities also substantially adds to air pollution. The project's overall objective is to improve energy efficiency and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by introducing renewable energy sources in a total of twelve health care facilities located in eight cities in the Mazowieckie Voivodship.
Goals
The goal of the project is to decrease emissions and environmental pollution by the introduction of renewable energy sources for hot water production in 12 healthcare facilities in the Mazowieckie region.
Activities
  • Preparation of hospitals in view of the installation of solar systems (removing old coal storage sheds and greeneries as well as renovation and reinforcement of roofs)
  • Purchase and installation of solar systems
  • Modernization and renovation of boiler houses
Results
  • Increased share of renewable energy from solar collectors
  • Reduced consumption of conventional fuels
  • Substantial reduction of CO, CO2, SO2, NOx and dust emissions from participating hospitals
