Treatment Plant for Domestic Septage and Industrial Waste in Vati, Limassol

The septage collected by tankers from overflowing absorption pits in some areas Limassol, was disposed in lagoons in Vati area, causing pollution of the water of the Polemidia Dam. The project is expected to close the existing septage reception area which negatively affected the quality of the water dam and the termination of the infiltration of untreated waste to the dam, and construct of a new treatment plant for the domestic septage, industrial waste surplus activated sludge and leachate from the rehabilitation of the uncontrolled landfill.

Theme/Focus Area
Environment and Infrastructure
Improvement of the Environment
Target Group
Public agencies, Local authorities, the inhabitants and small industries of the area to be serviced by the treatment plant
Context
Since 1997 the main source of water in Cyprus are dams on rivers or storage basins that are structured with the objective to provide water for drinking or irrigation.
Due to the absence of a sewerage network in some areas Limassol, as well as in small communities of the district, the septage collected by tankers from overflowing absorption pits, was disposed in lagoons in Vati area. In addition to the above, a number of small industries, either due to lack of space or to their small size, were not in a position to build their own treatment plants. As a result they disposed their wastewater in the above lagoons. The operation of these lagoons caused serious environmental problems.
Goals
The overall objective of the project is to observe the Water Framework Directive 2000/60/EC (WFD) through the achievement of a good water status for Polemidia Dam. The project is expected to close the existing septage reception area which negatively affected the quality of the water dam, the termination of the infiltration of untreated waste to the dam and the construction of a new treatment plant for the domestic septage, industrial waste surplus activated sludge and leachate from the rehabilitation of the uncontrolled landfill.
Activities
The project finances the design, procurement of equipment, construction of civil works, installation, testing, commissioning and operation for one year as defects liability period of the Domestic Septage, Industrial wastewater and surplus sludge Treatment Plant in Vati area, North to Limassol.
Results
The expected results are:

  • A technical- economic and environmental study in relation to the proposed plant.
  • Design, procurement of equipment, construction of civil works, installation, testing, commissioning and operation for one year as defects liability period of the Domestic Septage, Industrial wastewater and surplus sludge Treatment Plant.
