Waste Management System for the Association of Communes of the Lubartów

Efficient waste management systems are vital to prevent environmental pollution. Up to date, the waste management system in the Lubartow Subregion remains incomplete. Through the establishment of a well-functioning waste management system, the project aims at improving health and living conditions for the whole population in the Lubartów Subregion and at improving environmental conditions in this region.

Target Group

The direct beneficiaries are the Association of Communes of the Lubartów Subregion and its member communes as the institutions receiving direct financial support for the implementation of this project. Indirect beneficiaries are the inhabitants of the area covered by the project as they benefit from improved waste infrastructure, reduced pollution and a better, healthier environment.

Context
A well-functioning and comprehensive waste management system is important for the environment, people’s health and to avoid illegal waste dumps. In Lubartów Subregion, hazardous and communal waste is not properly separated and cleaned up. Therefore, the planned project aims to establish a Waste Management Facility providing collection and recycling services, to reclaim four waste dumps, to eliminate asbestos from roofing materials and to create a new financing model for waste management in the Lubartów region.
Goals
  • A significantly reduced health risk exposure of people today living in houses with asbestos containing roofs.
  • Improved health and living conditions for the whole population in the covered region.
  • Improved environmental conditions in the covered region.
Activities
  • Construction of a Waste Management Facility.
  • Reclamation and closure of inappropriate waste disposal sites.
  • Elimination of asbestos from roofing materials.
Results
  • Availability of an effective and efficient waste management system delivering high quality waste services to the 81'000 inhabitants of the region.
  • Cleaned and regenerated soil at the four reclaimed landfill sites.
  • Minimized danger of exogenous toxic substances contaminating the environment, particularly groundwater.
