Reforms for a knowledge-based economy are at the heart of the EU's Lisbon Agenda. Member states have the obligation to reform their higher education (HE) systems accordingly. The new member states are dealing simultaneously with the transition-based reform process in HE. Modernisation of teaching curricula and increase of relevance of research results for application are necessary, also with regard to the implementation of the Bologna reform in HE.
