Areas of Activities

Human and social development.
Training for diplomats in the Mediterranean region: Switzerland finances scholarships for young diplomats from North Africa and the Middle East which enable them to take Master’s courses at the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies (MEDAC). This represents a continuation of the many years of partnership between Switzerland and Malta to promote peace and stability in the Mediterranean area. A Swiss professor teaches at MEDAC and there is close cooperation with specialist Swiss institutes and the Swiss diplomatic service.

Prevention and diagnosis of cancer: An up-to-date infrastructure for cancer diagnosis is necessary if cancer is to be treated efficiently and effectively. Thanks to this project, a Positron-Emissions-Tomograph (PET-Scanner) is being installed in the public Mater Dei Hospital in Malta, which will provide access to modern cancer diagnosis for Malta’s entire population. In addition, support is also being provided for an independent oncology centre within the hospital, which will involve working together with the Oncological Institute of Southern Switzerland (IOSI) in Bellinzona. The project is a step towards reducing inequalities in the Maltese health service.
